Ms Lam (49) – Neighbourhood Folktales

Ms Lam (49)

Lived at shophouses along old Lim Chu Kang Rd. Whenever it rains heavily, the road will be flooded with rainwater. As our house is on higher ground of the road, we as kids would stand in front of our house and watch the vehicles attempting to cross the road where it is flooded. Of course, there were small cars which were too low and would go “dead” in the middle of the road “floating”and the driver would come out and push the vehicle away from the traffic. My father and 3 other shareholders had this shop (also our house) which is a specialised shop (i would say). We lived in the kampong area where the majority of the residents had poultry farming. Whenever their chickens are sick or dead, they would bring the dead chicken to our shop for diagnosis. There is a “vet”who would do “äutopsy” on the dead chicken and then prescribed medication for the rest of the chickens in their farm either to prevent further sickness or to cure the remaining lot. I did miss that scene whereby the vet did the autopsy. Our shophouse is also very near to a camp training site at Jalan Murai. In the past, whenever there was training going on, the army tank would drive past this old Lim Chu Kang road which would shake our shophouses… and we would run near the road to salute the army soldiers. As development in Singapore grows, we were asked to leave our cosy little shophouse and moved to HDB flat. Sometimes I still drive back to the location to take a look. Shophouse is gone, and they have sealed up the area.
